The Groundbreaking festivities began at 10:00 on June 14 with The Creek playing for the
crowd. The Creek, who also played for last year’s Fourth of July Celebration, were as
usual a crowd pleaser and many were dismayed to find they were finished when the
official ceremonies began. But the ceremonies had to go on.
Saturday was also Flag Day and the crowd opened the ceremonies by belting out the Star
Spangled Banner. Mayor Linda Key, first speaker of the day, remarked that this was a
huge day for Bell Buckle. Mayor Key noted that when she was thinking of running for
office nine years ago she decided to go out and speak to the residents to gather their input
in what they wanted for their community. Over and over she heard from the residents of
their desire to have a community park. By 1996, a referendum passed for a ½ cent sales
tax to fund a local park. Through patience and hard work this dream is becoming a
reality.
